Introspective at heart, Arata enjoys the company of himself. He knows what he wants to do, and what is important to him and doesn't look too deep into the meaning of having to be part of a group of friends. Arata is the type that feels it's important to work according to a plan and finish every task making it important for him to do things correctly and thoroughly. He's not the kind of person who abandons a project before finishing it, or slacks off when everyone else has lost interest. Instead, he strives to master everything he undertakes. Being a quick study, he doesn't shy away from challenges. He is not a "que sera sera" type of person, nor does he go easy on himself when attempting to master a new skill or get a job done. He generally doesn't need to have things explained to him more than once and when presented with a problem, he will often have an instant understanding of where to look for the solution. He also doesn't take his sweet time when presented with a new task to complete or problem to solve. He isn't afraid to perform assignments that require him to learn new skills.
He often behaves in a confident and forceful manner and takes charge of the situation; raising his hand in class, standing up for what he think is right, and leading others. He is not interested in fading into the woodwork, leaving everything to fate, taking more time than necessary to accomplish a task, or avoiding confrontation. In other words, he doesn't like wasting time or beating around the bush. Arata doesn't see the need to share what he's thinking and feeling with everyone in the world, and tends to present himself in a somewhat formal way in order to keep his inmost thoughts private. He is among those who can be happily occupied at home, away from the crowds, but, when the time comes, is equally enthusiastic about packing his bags and taking a trip. Though he is considered a "free spirit," whatever that may be, he is not comfortable expressing himself without a bit of self-censorship.

Arata has always been a contemplative child. He never really played with others, and if he did it wouldn't be for long. Born to a family who ran inns, it was only natural that their son would continue in the line of work as well. The family had two sons, the younger of the two being Arata. The eldest was groomed to be the heir and was expected to be heir without any questions. This however, lead the eldest son to foster a dislike of his family responsibilities. If his friends asked him to go out, he would have to decline and help out at the inn instead. If his crush asked him out, he wouldn't be able to go either. Eventually, the eldest son got his crush, and being fed up with the responsibilities of the inn and ran away to elope with his girlfriend. The two ran away from Kirimori, and soon enough, contact was lost with the eldest. After a while of turmoil in the family about much wasted time grooming the useless elder son, it was obvious that the situation made Arata a better suited heir than a son who ran away.
Arata wasn't much work to begin with, since he was always eager to help out at the inn. He was groomed to be a proper heir, and slowly his childhood was filled with checkpoints and tests the staff of the inn had pieced together for him to complete. Since he was now alone, he often took up these challenges and thought of them as games, eventually finding enjoyment out of them. His brother's absense didn't deter Arata at all. Since the age gap was large and his brother was always tempermental in the inn, the two siblings never significantly bonded or saw much of eachother either. In fact, Arata wanted his dear brother to leave, he wanted to be the heir.
Soon enough, Arata was molded into the perfect heir, and nothing would change the position. That is, until his brother returned to the family, now with a family of his own, and now incredibly poor. Unable to turn away their son, the family allowed him to return and bring in the problem of who would be the rightful heir. The eldest had more experience and years on the younger brother, but the younger brother had more eagerness with the inn than the older. Eventually, the family had to tend to business in Tokyo and left the care of the inn stationed in Kirimori to the eldest to run. Of course, being groomed to be docile, Arata showed no objections to his brother's sudden 'inheritance' of the inn he had worked so hard for and decided to focus on studies in HHS instead.
* He really wanted to be the heir; but with the sudden appearance of his older brother, he was forced to step down from the position again.
More into this:
Arata's family had to chose between being traditional and going with the eldest son or being modern and allowing the younger son to inherit. In this case, they chose to stay traditional.
* Since his occupied time with the inn was taken away from him, he now has an abundance of energy he doesn't know what to do with.
